BMW 3 Series: From Generation to Generation

Too often a new car model is introduced and within a generation or two the vehicle is discontinued in favor of another all new model. Usually, this occurs because a car has been a slow seller and/or the perception of the original model has dropped over an extended period of time. For BMW, success has been constant for its 3 Series ever since the smaller beamer was introduced in 1975. Sure, variations on the name have existed, i.e., 318, 325, 330, etc., but these were made to help differentiate model changes. For more than 30 years consumers have been purchasing the 3 Series, BMW’s most successful model of all time. Let’s take a look at the changes and where this esteemed group of cars might be heading.

It was during the late 1960s that BMW introduced to the world the 2002, a car that later gave way to the 3 Series. Noted for its performance, the car proved that BMW could build a high quality compact car that could compete against the likes of Audi and Mercedes. It was this high level of popularity which quickly caused BMW engineers to return to the drawing board and develop a more modern and advanced engineered version of the 2002. By 1975, the rechristened 316 began a run that continues even today: a performance oriented luxury compact for the masses. Or, at the very least, for those who can afford a BMW.

The original 3 Series were basic cars compared to today’s highly refined, well tuned, top engineered models. Quality BMW Oxygen Sensor to go along with the pollution controlling BMW Catalytic Converter.

By the early 1980s, larger engines including fuel injected V6s were introduced with diesel aspirated engines being made available in some markets. In addition, all wheel drive versions of the 3 Series came into production and the car line also gave birth to the Z1 Roadster. By the 1990s, the 3 Series success was so well established that the model became the world benchmark for vehicles in its class. Modern technology featuring advanced engineering, responsive handling, a well designed and comfortable cabin, and outstanding road performance were some of the 3 Series attributes during that period of time.

By 2000, the 3 Series once again was overhauled and again by 2005 yet another group of 3 Series models was introduced. Subsequent models incorporated the latest changes in BMW technology including more extensive use of aluminum, a 50-50 front to rear weight ratio for better handling, and new magnesium block engines.

Future models are certain to take advantage of lighter materials, improved technology, and advancements in engineering. All of this spells good news for fans of a line of cars that have been proven with the test of time. Indeed, as a popular seller car parts such as BMW Window Motor and BMW Window Regulator are widely available. This is good news for beamer lovers who plan on holding onto their current car for many years to come.
